THAT’S
WEIRD, GRANDMA
Barrel of
Monkeys (BOM) presents the return of “That’s Weird, Grandma,” new
installments (with some new cast members) of the critically acclaimed assortment
of scenes and songs adapted by the ensemble from Chicago public school
students. This NEW selection of
student-created and adult-produced theatrical sketches continues the successful
run begun in April 2001, and includes titles such as “Dear Jacob, This is
your desk, here are things I do not like about my life, ” “Que Sean Mejores los
Almuerzos en la Escuela” (about
how food should be better in the cafeteria) and “George Bush, Bill Clinton
and a Monkey.” After teaching
creative writing in the CPS system, BOM’s ensemble of actors, comedians,
musicians and playwrights selects and adapts some of the thousands of stories
generated by children for stage presentation. The result has been an audience favorite
– a show that is ‘safe’ for all ages (6+ recommended), yet very much appreciated
by an adult audience. “That’s Weird, Grandma” (named after one of the original sketches)
changes each week according to audience votes (switching 2-3 sketches in and out
each performance), and each show runs about one hour.
